How To Change Manual Transmission Fluid - FIXD Best OBD2 Scanner

Like motor oil, you can estimate the best time to change your transmission fluid based on the type of driving that you normally do.

For instance, if you regularly drive an automatic transmission car around town where there is frequent stop-and-go traffic, then your transmission will generate more heat. As a result, your transmission fluid will deteriorate faster. But if you normally drive on the highway at a fairly consistent speed without major elevation changes, then your fluid may last much longer before it degrades to the point of needing replacement. The fluid of manual transmissions has a shorter lifespan.

The typical manufacturer of a manual vehicle will tell you to change your fluid at around 30, to 60, miles. Of course, every make and model will likely have a different recommendation, but one that is within this range of miles. If you get the bolt loose.

Unscrew it, but don't remove it completely. Use the same process you used to remove the filler bolt to remove the drain bolt. Loosen the drain, place the drain pan under the transmission and then remove the drain bolt allowing the oil to drain. The drain bolt usually has a magnet on it that catches the metal shavings.

Clean them off really well. I'm betting it's been over 50, Kms for this vehicle. Now remove the filler bolt. Replace the drain bolt, thread it on by hand first for at least 3 complete revolutions to make sure you haven't cross threaded it.

Then tighten it with the ratchet. Lastly tighten it with a torque wrench to the manufacturers specifications. If you are unaware of the settings call your dealer and they will tell you. Add your gear oil back into the gearbox using the oil pump. Fill the oil into the filler until the oil reaches the level of the filler It will ooze back out.

Clean up and take the car for a test drive. Please take your used oil to a recycling depot. It's free in many areas. Old oil can be processed into Diesel fuel or plastics among other things. Canadian Tire accepts old oil at their Auto service bays. Question 3 years ago on Step 2. My BMW's transmission is having some problems and I didn't know if there was a way I could try to fix it on my own instead of taking it to the shop.

Thank you for the great instructions. I think my husband and I will try this tomorrow since he loves messing with car stuff. I have a few problems with this instructable. If you get it wrong you're putting no oil into some of the gearbox.

Having said that changing gearbox oil is a great idea. I owned a transmission shop foe 40 years, most of my work came from poor maintenance. These are pretty good instructions I just think you left out a few details that may help. If either of the plugs are damaged or hard to remove, you should have a professional look at your car.

Just as you would for a tire rotation , start by jacking up the vehicle on a level surface and place jack stands in a safe location to support the vehicle. Be sure to use a tire chock in front of and behind the front tires to protect against the vehicle rolling. Start by positioning a drain pan directly under the drain plug. Keep in mind that as soon as you remove this drain plug, fluid will begin to pour out of the transmission.

This can actually be the most challenging step when you change manual transmission fluid as it can be difficult to add fluid without making a mess. On front-wheel drive cars, it is sometimes possible to use a rubber hose to act as a funnel extension so you can add fluid from the engine compartment. We also discuss what transmission fluid change costs. You will also need a new transmission filter and possibly a pan gasket. To find out the exact cost of your specific repairs, get a quote from your local dealership or mechanic; this can be done over the phone. It also serves as a coolant, viscous fluid, and helps transmit power from your engine in automatic transmissions. Different types of transmission fluids can be used in a car, depending on which vehicle has them.

Manual transmission s can use any oil, including regular motor oil and specialized gear oil. Automatic transmissions use automatic transmission fluid.

It will specify which type of transmission fluid is best to use. The transmission fluid is what allows the gears to shift properly. A transmission fluid change is when the fluid in your transmission system is replaced. The fluid in a transmission system can become contaminated with time due to wear and tear on the components. This causes some debris to get into the fluid. The fluid will begin to degrade in cars that have a manual transmission.

This can also cause fluid contamination. These factors can lead to the gradual degradation of transmission systems over time. Regular transmission fluid changes are therefore recommended. When you have your transmission fluid changed, the fluid is drained and new fluid is put into the system. This ensures that there are no particles in the oil that could lead to a catastrophic failure of your transmission.

Transmission fluid changes can be done at any time during the life of your vehicle as long as the car has not exceeded its recommended mileage or age limit for this type of service. Every 30,, miles, or every two years, a transmission fluid replacement should be performed. The transmission fluid should be replaced when it darkens in color or becomes gritty feeling. The color change is a good indication that the additives in the fluid have become depleted, but this will not always be apparent.

Regularly changing the transmission fluid will keep it in top condition and prevent any severe damage.

- Manual transmission fluid change

Your car's manual transmission fluid is more important than you think. Though it doesn't have to be changed as often as motor oil , fresh gearbox fluid keeps your stick-shift transmission from overheating and tearing itself apart. That's why Jason Fenske from Engineering Explained is here to show you how to change your car's transmission fluid right in your garage.

Since manual transmissions do their jobs through a lot of metal-to-metal contact, they need lubricant to soften touch points and keep everything running smoothly. Over time, that fluid gets dirty and worn out, and needs to be changed. The first step is getting your car in the air and sitting level. This lets you access the transmission and insures you'll fill it to the correct level. Next, find the fill plug on the upper portion of the transmission housing and unscrew it.

Then, find the drain plug, and undo that to drain the gearbox. Make sure to have a catch pan ready. After everything's drained, reinstall the drain plug with a new washer, and refill the transmission, using a transfer pump to get the fluid up into the filler hole. Replace the fill plug with a new washer, clean up any excess fluid, and boom, you're done.

Pretty easy right? Fenske put together a thorough video walking us through how to change the transmission fluid on his personal Honda S It goes into great detail, so if you're getting ready to swap out your own car's fluid, it's a must-watch.
